Men's wrap: Hope wins rivalry game

Ben Gardner scored 16 points as six players scored in double figures to lead Hope over No. 13 Calvin 73-70. Nate Van Arendonk and Chase DeMaagd added 12 apiece and three more scored 11 in the win in the 184th meeting of the biggest rivalry in Division III basketball.

Calvin's Jordan Brink hit two key 3-pointers on the road in front of a capacity crowd of 3,675, but missed one with 21 seconds left that would have given Calvin the lead. Hope hit all four of its foul shots down the stretch to ice the win.

Tom Snikkers scored 14 but was 0-for-4 from downtown for the Knights. "We didn't bring it today," Snikkers said. "That starts with me.  I'm a senior and a leader on this team. I did not get the job done."

No. 8 Catholic cut a 20-point deficit to two in the second half but was unable to get over the hump as Scranton pulled away to the 82-74 upset. Brendan Boken scored a team-high 21 points and Travis Farrell added 15, including six of the Royals' final seven points to ice the win. 

No. 14 Wooster beat archrival Wittenberg 75-71 as Kenny DeBoer and Doug Thorpe each scored 20 to lead the Scots, who moved to 20-3, 13-1 in the NCAC. Zack Leahy hit three free throws with 21 seconds to go to get the Tigers within 71-69, but Wooster made all four foul shots down the stretch to ice the victory.

No. 9 Illinois Wesleyan clinched the regular-season crown in the CCIW, improving to 12-0 in the league and 20-3 overall with a 78-59 win at Carthage. Kevin Reed was a perfect 10-for-1 from the floor en route to 22 points. The Titans crushed Carthage on the boards, 42-16.

No. 21 Christopher Newport lost its third consecutive game, falling 73-68 at LaGrange. The Panthers made just 12 of their 26 free throws, but CNU was awarded just four foul shots in the loss.

No. 17 Hampden-Sydney rolled out to a 51-16 halftime lead and remained on cruise control the rest of the way, defeating Bridgewater 95-49. Harrison George scored a game-high 20 as the Tigers improved to 21-2, 13-1 in the ODAC. Four of the five Seahawk starters scored in double digits as No. 12 St. Mary's (Md.) notched a 74-64 CAC win against Marymount, sweeing the season series. The Seahawks are 21-2, 9-1 in the CAC.

Sheldon Jones scored a game-high 25 points while Patrick Sabatino poured in 20 points, had nine boards, three blocks and two steals as No. 25 Stevens defeated Ithaca 87-65 to improve to 20-3 and take over sole possession of first in the Empire 8.

Tommy Hannon scored a season-high 23 points and top-ranked St. Thomas went on a run midway through the first half to put archrival St. John's away early in a 93-68 win. Nathan Haynes scored 18 points and pulled down 15 rebounds as No. 22 Wheaton (Ill.) defeated Millikin 62-52.

Olivet overcame Ian Jackson's 44 points and defeated Trine 84-79. Blake Krum led the Comets with 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Muhlenberg rallied from a 16-point deficit to win at McDaniel, 83-82, clinching a Centennial Conference tournament berth. Kevin Hargrove led the way with 29 points on 12-for-15 shooting.

Zack Sly hit two key baskets down the stretch while Jay Donovan added three free throws in the final minute as Delaware Valley extended its school-record winning streak to eight and sealed at least one home MAC Freedom tournament game with a 61-58 triumph at defending champion Misericordia.

Trayvon Vann hit a putback at the overtime buzzer to lift Salisbury past rival Frostburg State 71-70 in overtime. He finished with 27 points. Grinnell moved into a first-place tie with St. Norbert in the Midwest Conference by defeating the Green Knights 104-99 in overtime. Luke Yeager led the Pioneers with 31 points, shooting 6-for-10 from 3-point range, while Griffin Lentsch added 21.

UMHB pulled out with a 13-0 first half run and locked down Texas Lutheran 74-54 to join the 20-win club. Antonie Chaney led the Cru with 17 points off the bench, hitting six of seven from the field.

In front of a packed house, Swarthmore (6-17, 5-11) put together its best game of the season, knocking off first-place Franklin & Marshall 73-63 in overtime. Joe Keedy came off the bench to lead the Garnet, tying a career high with 23 points. F&M has now lost to the bottom three teams in the Centennial Conference: Haverford, Swarthmore and Washington College.

Chris Astorga had a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds in Virginia Wesleyan's 70-62 ODAC win at Guilford. The Marlins led from wire to wire to win at Guilford for the first time since Jan. 28, 2007.

Scott Theisen posted his second triple-double of the season, contributing 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to lead Carleton past Macalester. He has now accounted for two of the 18 triple-doubles posted nationally in men's basketball in any NCAA division, the other coming Jan. 23 against Concordia-Moorhead.

Greensboro won its sixth consecutive game and its eighth in nine games, shooting 10-for-14 from 3-point range on the road in winning at Maryville 90-79. The Scots are finding their first year in the USA South to be a rough one, as they are 9-12 overall, 4-8 in the league.
