Carnegie Mellon’s head women’s basketball coach, Gerri Seidl, announced her resignation effective April 1, 2011. “After 27 years at Carnegie Mellon University, it is time for me to move on to a new adventure.” 

During her tenure, Seidl built a defensive-minded program in one of the best Division III basketball conferences in the nation. Seidl earned 275 wins, three conference titles and two NCAA tournament appearances during her tenure at Carnegie Mellon.

The Tartans were 2-23 this past season, bringing Seidl's career mark to 275-390. Carnegie Mellon was 0-14 in the UAA.

In 1988-89 the Tartans secured the school's first-ever President’s Athletic Conference championship. The team posted a 20-7 mark that season and advanced to the second round of the Division III postseason tournament during the first appearance in school history. The following year, the team repeated as PAC champion with a 17-9 season.

The program continued to make headlines in 1990-91 when Seidl’s group set a school record with 21 wins while capturing the school’s first University Athletic Association title. The Tartans earned their second postseason berth and climbed to 16th in the final national poll that season. The following season, the squad went 18-4, a mark that included a 14-game winning streak.

“I want to thank Gerri Seidl for her commitment to her students and to the University. We appreciate her efforts on behalf of the basketball program, the athletics department, and Carnegie Mellon University. We wish her well in her new endeavors,” said athletic director Susan Bassett.

A national search for a new head women’s basketball coach will be conducted immediately. All day-to-day basketball program matters will be managed by assistant women’s basketball coach, Suzanne Bowser.
