Ithaca and Scranton picked up big wins on Friday night to solidify their places atop their respective conferences.
No. 21 Ithaca took the lead early on visiting Stevens and never trailed, but that doesn't mean it was easy for the Bombers. The Ducks got within two with 2:14 to play and had two chances to tie or take the lead, but could not. Ithaca hung on for the 73-68 victory and pushed Stevens a game and a half back in the Empire 8 standings. Phil Barera had 20 points and 13 rebounds and Sean Rossi added 10 points and eight assists for Ithaca.
After playing every game at home since mid-December, Scranton went on the road and picked up a big win at Catholic, 78-68. Zach Ashworth notched a career high with 31 points and the Royals improved to 13-2, 6-0 in the Landmark Conference. Earlier in the week Ashworth scored the 1,500th point of his career. Scranton also has a three-game cushion n the Landmark over five teams tied for second, including Catholic.
Case Western Reserve beat two ranked teams at home last weekend, but couldn't duplicate that success on the road. Emory shot 54 percent from the field to defeat the Spartans 97-73 in Atlanta. The Eagles turned a nine point deficit into a nine point lead in the final nine minutes of the first half and then pushed the lead into double-digits early in the second half. Elsewhere in the UAA, Rochester defeated Carnegie Mellon 77-60 as the Yellowjackets' John DiBartolomeo finished one rebound shy of a triple-double (12 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds).
No. 3 Whitworth shot 19-for-34 from three-point range in beating Pacific 94-48, including three players with 20 or more. No. 5 Middlebury and No. 21 Brandeis slipped past unranked opponents at home, as the Panthers beat Wesleyan 64-56 and the Judges topped Chicago 59-53.
In women's action, Trinity (Texas) surprised visiting DePauw 68-59 to get its record in SCAC play even at 4-4 and 7-9 overall. Trinity led throughout the second half until No. 10 DePauw fought back to tie the game at 57 with 2:30 to play. Abby Dietert answered with a basket and two free throws for Trinity and the homestanding Tigers went on to win.
Tufts ended No. 13 Bowdoin's 14-game winning streak the hard way, by beating the Polar Bears in Maine 62-49. Tiffany Kornegay had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Jumbos who take their 12-2 record to Colby tomorrow. The Mules are coming off a big win of their own as they outlasted rival Bates 90-88 in triple overtime. Lauren Dobish scored a layup at the buzzer for Bates to tie the game at 69 at the end of regulation. Diana Manduca hit a jumper with three seconds left in the third extra period to give Colby the win.
Geneseo State stayed perfect in the SUNYAC with a win at home over Oswego State 64-45. The Blue Knights host Cortland State tomorrow. George Fox continued its dominance of rival Puget Sound by beating the Loggers in Tacoma 56-40. The Bruins have won the last eight meetings between the teams.
