Busy Monday opens hoops season

Kacie Mills and Medaille upset No. 5 Rochester 53-52 in both teams' season opener.

The 2010-11 basketball season tipped off with a full slate of men's and women's games on Monday night. And the biggest surprise of opening night was also one of the earliest finals.

Medaille tipped No. 5 Rochester 53-52 in a meeting of 2010 NCAA tournament teams. The Lady Mavericks built a five point lead with 2:23 to play and held on to win when Rochester missed a baseline jumper at the buzzer. Tanisha Travis had 11 points and 14 rebounds for Medaille, whose next game is an exhibition at Division I Army.

Medaille wasn't the only surprise winner on the women's side. Kelley Paradis scored 30 points as the University of New England topped Southern Maine 89-79. The Nor'easters and Huskies each made the NCAA tournament last year.

On the men's side, Guilford comes off last season's Final Four appearance, but with a significantly different starting lineup. The Quakers, who only return two starters from last year, fell to intracity rival Greensboro in overtime 76-73. Freshman Damian Dixon scored 22 points for the Pride. No. 20 Washington U., which only returns one starter from last year, took care of MacMurray 79-57.  Danny Jones scored 26 points and No. 2 Randolph-Macon shot 60.9 percent from the field as the Yellow Jackets drilled Marymount 89-46.

Merchant Marine defeated rival Coast Guard 83-72 making coach Danny Nee a winner in his Mariners' debut.  NJAC favorite Ramapo took care of York (N.Y.) 70-60.  No. 12 Virginia Wesleyan fought off Salisbury 67-63. Swarthmore beat the buzzer in the first half to add to a big lead and survived a buzzer beater attempt by Widener to end the game (video highlights) and beat the Pride 74-72.
