Crunching the key numbers

Much of the selection process for the NCAA Tournament in Division III basketball comes down to numbers. And when the regulars on our forum start tossing around acronyms such as OWP, OOWP, AQ and the like, it's easy for someone who's new to the playoff picture to get just a bit lost.

&&f-boxr&&But never fear. We'll try to make the process a little more transparent for you. Every year we project who will make the NCAA Tournament on the final night of the season, and because the process is so numbers-driven, we're able to get all but one or two teams right on an annual basis, even though we aren't privy to any inside knowledge or insight.

As often as we can, we do the same number-crunching the NCAA does, to determine what each team's strength of schedule numbers are. This season the NCAA has made public what was already a common practice: strength of schedule is two-thirds OWP (that's opponents' winning percentage) and one-third OOWP (the opponents' opponents' winning percentage). We've posted them for the first time this season, through Sunday's games:

Men's strength of schedule and women's strength of schedule, which can also be found on the right-hand menu rail.
