The top three teams in Division III mens basketball all fell on the road on Tuesday.
Transylvania opened the full day with a bang, beating two-time defending national champion and top-ranked Washington U 73-69 at Woosters Mose Hole Classic. The Pioneers built a 17 point second-half lead behind Tim Tierneys 25 points. The Bears pulled within two with seven seconds left on a layup by Sean Wallis but Tierney calmly hit two free throws to put the game away. The Bears last loss came last February against Rochester in the UAA regular season. Transylvania (7-4) will face No. 25 Wooster who rolled over winless Kalamazoo 70-41.
&&f-boxr&&No. 4 UW-Stevens Point snapped No. 2 St. Thomas' regular season win streak in convincing fashion, rolling to a 78-56 victory. The Pointers outscored the Tommies 42-18 in the paint and Bob Semling picked up his 100th win in his fifth season at UW-Stevens Point. St. Thomas had won 33 consecutive regular season games dating back to February 2008. More men's scores.
One night after nipping Whitman, No. 3 UW-Whitewater saw its undefeated run end at the hands of Whitworth, 94-84. The Pirates forced 14 Warhawks' turnovers and committed just three of their own. Eric Beal led the way for Whitworth (6-2) with 18 points and nine assists. Perhaps the day's most surprising result came at St. Norbert where Northwestern (Minn.) stunned the 15th ranked Green Knights 72-70. St. Norbert entered the game undefeated while the Eagles (now 5-6) shouldered a four game losing streak. The Green Knights will play No. 24 Chicago in the consolation game of that tournament since Edgewood defeated the Maroons 67-61 in the opener. To put a cap on a wild day, Hamline scored with one second left to pick off No. 8 Wheaton (Ill.) 69-68.
The women's side didn't have as many upsets but not all ranked teams escaped Tuesday unscathed. Trinity (Conn.) surprised No. 9 Thomas More 60-53, handing the Saints their first loss. Christine Card notched 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Bantams (9-2). Another Trinity was on the other side of an upset as UW-Stout took care of No. 8 Trinity (Texas) 82-67. More women's finals.
No. 21 St. Norbert erased a six-point deficit with 65 seconds left and rallied to beat UW-Platteville, 61-58. No. 21 UW-River Falls stayed unbeaten with a win in California over Washington and Jefferson, 63-59. Erin Hollinger (24 points, seven rebounds) pushed Case Western to its eighth straight win as the Spartans defeated Wilmington 68-66.
Back in men's action outside the Top 25, William Paterson stayed hot by beating Buffalo State 67-57 for its eighth consecutive win. John Mantel reached the 1,000-point mark in his career in Calvin's overtime win over Ohio Northern 70-67 while Corey McAdam broke Nazareth's assist record in the Golden Flyers' loss to Albright, 67-59.
