IWU runs away from Elmhurst

The top-ranked Division III women's team survived a scare in its regular-season finale, as Illinois Wesleyan rallied from a 20-point second-half deficit to beat Elmhurst 81-75.

Five Titans scored in double figures as they went on a 27-4 run, turning a 56-42 deficit into a 69-60 lead. Christina Solari and Stacey Arlis scored 16 points apiece. &&g-boxr&&Four teams tied for the SUNYAC title, but three of them failed to survive the first round of the conference tournament on Tuesday night. Top-seeded Geneseo State got taken down by eighth-seeded Brockport State 78-64 while Cortland State beat third-seed Buffalo State 68-65. No. 7 UW-Whitewater survived a scare from UW-River Falls for the second time in four days, as Matt Goodwin scored 25 points to lead the Warhawks past the Falcons 86-81. The third-seeded Warhawks travel to second-seeded UW-Platteville on Thursday night. Top-seeded UW-Stevens Point will host UW-Oshkosh, which beat UW-Eau Claire 75-60. In the NJAC, Rutgers-Newark knocked Montclair State off the bubble, beating the Red Hawks in the conference semifinals 58-57. No. 10 Richard Stockton had little trouble with William Paterson 83-67.

Gwynedd-Mercy will host Cabrini on Friday night for the CSAC crown after the Griffins stormed past Baptist Bible and Cabrini edged Keystone 64-62. It's Cabrini's first 20-win season since 2000-01.

Wooster's emotional week took an upswing as the Scots beat Denison 101-68 in the NCAC quarterfinals. The program has been mourning the death of assistant coach Doug Cline's son in a car accident. Wittenberg's season ended at 13-13 as Kenyon got 18 points from J.T. Knight to advance to the NCAC semifinals with a 65-60 win. Third-seeded Hiram and second-seeded Ohio Wesleyan fell as well, leaving Wooster and No. 5 seed Kenyon, No. 6 Wabash and No. 7 Allegheny in competition for the automatic bid.

In other women's action, Kalea Davis set the Division III career record with her 16th consecutive double-double as Baruch beat Brooklyn 87-75 to advance to the CUNYAC finals. They'll face Lehman for the championship, as they have the past two years. The top seeds all advanced in the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament, although Baldwin-Wallace needed a Jessica Butzer jump shot with 2.19 seconds to go to edge seventh-seeded Otterbein 70-68. Top seeds advanced in the WIAC as well, as third-seeded UW-Eau Claire beat sixth-seeded UW-River Falls 62-47 and No. 4 seed UW-Stout beat UW-La Crosse 80-72.

And Maryville (Mo.) ended its last Division III regular season with one final SLIAC win. It was the 92nd SLIAC win in a row for the Saints, extending their Division III record for consecutive conference wins.
