Middlebury survives, Trinity falls

No. 13 Middlebury rallied from a six-point deficit in the final minute of overtime to force a second extra period, then scored with three seconds left to finish off Trinity (Conn.) 78-76. Ben Rudin scored a team-high 23 points and fed Andrew Lock for the game-winner as the Panthers won their 17th consecutive game. No. 11 Trinity (Texas) never got back on track, however, trailing the final 38 minutes of the game and scoring just three points in the final five minutes of an 86-67 loss at Millsaps. &&f-boxr&&Amherst couldn't keep pace with Middlebury, heading into their matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Lord Jeffs fell to archrival Williams 79-68 at home as Kevin Snyder scored a career-high 30 points for the Ephs. The Amherst loss clinched the top seed in the NESCAC tournament for Middlebury.

No. 6 Puget Sound won its 15th consecutive game, beating NWC second-place team Whitworth 81-71. Defending national champs Washington U. moved to the verge of clinching the first bid into this year's tournament by surviving a scare at Emory, 71-68. The Bears held a 10-point lead with 2:02 to play but the Eagles answered with an 11-2 run. Tyler Nading stole the ball from Julien Williams as time expired to prevent Emory from taking a potential game tying shot. The win, coupled with a loss by No. 21 Carnegie Mellon vs. Brandeis and one by NYU at Rochester means the Bears can clinch the UAA title with a win at Case Western Reserve on Sunday.

Both Baruch teams finished a perfect 13-0 to clinch No. 1 seeds in the upcoming CUNYAC tournament. The men beat Lehman 86-67 behind 19 from Sean Loftus and 17 from Lionel Hilaire, while the women beat Lehman 80-48 with 17 from Shadae Rice.

In other women's action, No. 2 Rochester sprinted away from No. 16 NYU 64-46, using runs of 18-3 and 15-3 to help seal the deal. No. 9 Amherst survived Williams 66-61 to improve to 22-1. Friday's women's scores.
