St. Mary's (Md.) beat Division II Bowie State 82-75 on Friday night in a men's basketball exhibition game at the Verizon Center in Washington. Bowie State was the preseason top pick in its division of the CIAA, while St. Mary's went to the Division III Sweet 16 last season.
The Seahawks stayed within arm's reach of Bowie State early in the first half until BSU exploded on a 18-1 to open up a 34-20 advantage. St. Mary's battled to close the first half with a 15-9 run, trailing by five at the break, 39-35.
Bowie State's shooting percentage fell to 31 percent in the second half (11-of-36) but the St. Mary's shooting percentage increased from 32 percent in the first half (9-of-28) to 53 percent (17-of-32) in the final 20 minutes of play. Calvin Wise played a key role in the St. Mary's comeback, scoring 12 of his 14 points in the second half. Wise wrapped up the game as the Seahawks' top rebounder with nine.
St. Mary's Camontae Griffin scored a game-high 25 points which included 11-of-12 from the free throw line. James Davenport also scored in double digits, netting 16 points, 12 of which came from the foul line.
Senior Curtis Massey led Bowie State in scoring with 18 points.
