PeacePlayers to receive ESPY

PeacePlayers International will receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs this month, the network announced. The ESPN award will be presented to two players in the organization co-founded by Division III alumnus Sean Tuohey and his brother, Brendan Tuohey.

PeacePlayers, formerly known as Playing for Peace, brings children together in troubled parts of the world to promote understanding between groups. The organization has a presence in Israel, Ireland and South Africa. A pair of players -- a Protestant rugby player and a Catholic basketball player -- will receive the award.

"We target boys and girls age 10 to 15 who are old enough to learn the game, but young enough not to have formed permanent opinions," Sean Tuohey, who was an all-conference player at Catholic, told Around the Nation in 2006. "We are helping to shape their views based on actual experience."

"This year the Arthur Ashe Award honors two men who refused to listen to those who taught them to hate and instead are courageously teaching hope and quietly working to unite a nation," Maura Mandt, executive producer of the ESPYs, said on the network's Web site. "Trevor (Ringland and Dave (Cullen) have seized an opportunity to help children realize that their 'enemy' has a face that is just like their own."

The ESPYs air July 15.
