What others say: "Jared was an outstanding player, and he was a winner. He did whatever it took to help the team win and always made big shots. ... He was a smooth lefty that didn't miss much. He could play inside out. ... He changed the program and his records will be hard to break." – Todd McGuinness, former Hartwick head coach
In their own words: "Everything that I have accomplished during my playing career is because of my coaches and teammates. Coach McGuinness brought out the best in me and saw my true potential. It was never about individual accolades, all I wanted was to win as much as possible. I wanted to help bring Hartwick back to its winning ways. I can not thank my coaches and teammates enough for four great years of college basketball. This honor is as much theirs as it is mine, and I hope they are all doing well."
Where are they now: Superintendent at the Golf Club of Newport (N.Y.) and enjoying his newborn daughter Scarlett
Career synopsis: From 1995 through 2009, the Harwick men's basketball team had managed just three winning seasons. Then Jared Suderley came to Oneonta, New York, from a little farther upstate and turned the Hawks' program around. Suderley entered the Hawks' starting lineup in the fifth game of his freshman year – he scored 27 points in a nine-point loss to Skidmore – and never left it. The left-handed forward won the Empire 8 Rookie of the Year award and lifted the Hawks to their first Empire 8 title in any sport by scoring 21 points against St. John Fisher.
More awards followed in his sophomore season when we was named the conference MVP and an All-American. That season ended in the first round of the NCAA Tournament when Hartwick lost 98-88 in a memorable duel between Suderely and another All-Decade honoree. In Suderley's senior season, he averaged a double-double and shot 43.5 percent from three on his way to another conference MVP and another conference title. He finished as Hartwick's all-time leading scorer (2,034 points) and rebounder (920). Along with John DiBartolomeo, he is one of only two East region players to be named first team All-American in the last decade.
"He does stuff and we're like, 'Oh my gosh,' " McGuinness said when asked about Suderley in 2012. "People ask me all the time and I just say, 'He's really good.' ... I'm surprised when he misses, I'll put it that way."
