Gwynedd-Mercy, Richard Stockton and Brooklyn punched their tickets for the Division III men's basketball NCAA Tournament, while Baruch did the same for the women's tournament in Friday night's action. (For more Friday night coverage, including scores, scroll down.)
Dave Smith scored 25 points, had 12 rebounds and blocked four shots to lead Gwynedd-Mercy to the Colonial States Athletic Conference title with a 108-96 win against Cabrini. It's the Griffins' first NCAA Tournament trip since 2005. Photo gallery.
&&g-boxr&&Brooklyn ran away from Baruch in the CUNYAC men's title game, clinching the automatic bid with an 89-69 win. Richard Stockton joined Washington U. in returning to the NCAA Tournament, as Kai Massaquoi scored 21 points in leading the No. 10 Ospreys past Rutgers-Newark 62-54. Richard Stockton made the Sweet 16 in 2008.
In the one women's title game of the night, Baruch held on against Lehman, even though Sally Nnamani had two free throw attempts with four seconds left and the last shot from the floor. She missed all three and Baruch claimed the CUNYAC women's automatic bid, 64-63.
The teams join the Washington U. men and women, which have already clinched the UAA's automatic bids. The UAA is the only Division III conference which does not have a conference tournament to determine its automatic qualifier.
There are more bids to be handed out this weekend, with the NCAA Tournament brackets to be announced Monday.
